Plastic is an issue. Especially in the cosmetics industry. At Sobha, we really don’t want to be part of the problem. It’s our ambition to use zero plastic in our products (unless they’re 100% biodegradable within 6 months and without special composting).
Frankly, it’s easier just not to deal with the material – hence our metal jars which allow us to avoid plastic altogether. We use aluminium, which is one of the best materials within which to store cosmetics because not very reactive. Not only are we saving on plastic, but we’re allowing for a longer shelf life of our product and the highest possible smell retention too.
Here, a sustainable solution has actually improved a product offering without costing more than the ‘easy’ alternative. We’re not perfect yet. There’s a small plastic sleeve inside our lids which make the seals more airtight. In the next iteration, we aim to find a sustainable alternative.
Sustainability is a choice and doesn’t need to be difficult. It’s simply a way of approaching business. We’ve been inspired too, by a company called Interface. Interface works within a massively energy intensive sector; office carpeting. The company used to have a massive carbon footprint due the energy intensive manufacturing processes it employed, and the fact its carpets were literally made out of petroleum. Thirty years after placing sustainability at its core, Ray Anderson (its late CEO) has turned the company carbon-negative. Learn more about Interface here.
As Interface has done, we aim to be sustainable throughout all our company activities – whether that’s removing plastic from our packaging, achieving a carbon negative footprint, ensuring the production of our natural ingredients extends the natural habitat of wildlife, rather than reduces it, or that our team members in less developed countries are compensated fairly.
By doing so, we not only decouple our growth from negative environment impact, but as we expand, we’ll be able to do more good. Stay tuned for updates
